Baby Bath Tips to Avoid Accidents and Injury to Your Child

After the arrival of the newborn baby, the first few months are very crucial for new parents as they have to learn various things that are really challenging. Not only they have to make sure that the baby is happy, but also that the baby is safe and free from any risky situations. Bathing time can be great fun for both the parents and the child, but this fun can also turn to serious accidents if you are not careful with the baby.

Things to consider while giving a bath to the newborn:

1. Use a bath tub or sink: There is no one size fits all solution when it comes to following baby bath tips. Babies can be given a bath in a bath tub, or a sink. If you choose a sink, then make sure to use a towel or a rubber mat so that the infant doesn’t slip. An adult tub or unlined sink can be very slippery for the child and should be avoided. Another important thing to remember is not to use a tub for bathing till the baby has the umbilical cord attached. Wait until it has fallen and dried or thoroughly healed. During this time, give a sponge and take precautions to keep infections away from affecting the cord.

2. The cleaning process: Your newborn is delicate and gentle and so you have to be very careful while cleaning. Use warm water to clean the cord and in case you observe any infection, talk to your doctor immediately before the situation gets worse. Don’t use harsh clothes, soap to clean the baby. Remember that the hands, neck, diaper region and face should be regularly cleaned to keep the baby hygienic.

3. Temperature of the water: Maintaining the temperature of the water is essential for your baby as the water should not be too hot or too cold. To test the temperature of the water you can use the traditional method of dipping your wrist or elbow into the tub of water. You will also find special thermometers that change the color when the correct water temperature is achieved. Remember that the water should be only about 2 to 3 inches high as too much water is just unsafe and it increases the risk of the baby sinking into the tub.

4. Never leave the baby alone: Bathing time is a special experience between the parents and the child and the baby relies on you for all his care. Extra attention and care is needed to ensure a pleasant experience for both of you. While giving a bath, never leave your child alone in the water to bring some essentials. Don’t become distracted and never try to talk on the phone during bath time. If there is anything urgent, then remove the child from the tub first and take him with you. Don’t leave the baby unattended in any case.
